INPE (Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais) is Brazil's national space research institute, founded in 1961 and headquartered in São José dos Campos, São Paulo. INPE is internationally recognized for operating DETER and PRODES — near-real-time and annual deforestation monitoring systems for the Amazon — making it the primary global authority on Amazon forest loss data cited by governments, NGOs, and media. The institute manages Brazil's participation in the CBERS (China-Brazil Earth Resources Satellite) program, a joint Earth observation constellation producing multispectral imagery available free to Latin American and African countries.

INPE also operates meteorological satellites, conducts atmospheric science research, and manages the CRS ground station in Cuiabá. The institute employs approximately 1,800 researchers and technical staff and has trained generations of Brazilian space scientists.
