About Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum
The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is a major aerospace and military history museum in New York City, located on Pier 86 on the Hudson River at 46th Street in Midtown Manhattan, opened in 1982. The museum is housed aboard the USS Intrepid (CV-11), an Essex-class aircraft carrier that served in World War II (launching aircraft during the Pacific campaigns, surviving two kamikaze strikes and a torpedo hit), the Cold War (recovering Mercury and Gemini astronauts as a NASA prime recovery ship), and the Vietnam War era. The Intrepid was decommissioned in 1974 and designated a National Historic Landmark.
The museum's space history collections are anchored by the Space Shuttle Enterprise (OV-101), the prototype orbiter used for NASA's Approach and Landing Tests at Edwards Air Force Base in 1977. Enterprise was the first Space Shuttle ever built but never flew in space — it was a structural/aerodynamic test vehicle without operational engines or heat shield tiles. After serving as a test article and exhibit at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum Udvar-Hazy Center, Enterprise was transferred to Intrepid in 2012 when Space Shuttle Discovery arrived at Udvar-Hazy. Enterprise is housed in a dedicated glass pavilion on the Intrepid's flight deck visible from surrounding streets and the Hudson River.
Beyond Enterprise, the museum's aviation collection spans a remarkable breadth: a Lockheed A-12 Avenger II (CIA SR-71 predecessor), Concorde (one of only 20 built, retired 2003), numerous carrier-based Navy and Marine fighter aircraft from the WWII and Cold War eras, and various missiles and rockets. The submarine USS Growler, a guided missile submarine, is permanently moored alongside the Intrepid as a walk-through exhibit. The museum attracts approximately 1 million visitors annually and operates STEM education programs for New York-area schools, including space science curricula tied to NASA mission histories.
