About INVAP Argentina

INVAP (Investigación Aplicada) is an Argentine state-owned technology company founded in 1976 in San Carlos de Bariloche, Patagonia, specializing in nuclear technology, satellite manufacturing, radar systems, and industrial applications — one of the most technically diversified high-technology entities in Latin America. Originally established as the applied research arm of the CNEA (Comisión Nacional de Energía Atómica, Argentina's nuclear energy agency) to commercialize nuclear research reactor technology, INVAP has expanded into space systems as Argentina's primary satellite manufacturer and a significant international EO satellite prime contractor.

INVAP's satellite program began in the 1990s with Argentina's SAC (Satélite de Aplicaciones Científicas) series: SAC-B (1996, X-ray astronomy), SAC-C (2000, Earth observation with international partners including NASA, CONAE), SAC-D/Aquarius (2011, oceanography and soil moisture with NASA JPL — the first NASA-led mission on an Argentine satellite), and SAC-D. These programs established INVAP as a credible space prime contractor with genuine science mission heritage comparable to small national satellite developers in Europe.

INVAP also manufactures SAOCOM — Argentina's sophisticated L-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) Earth observation constellation (SAOCOM-1A launched 2018, SAOCOM-1B 2020) built for the Argentine Air Force and CONAE. SAOCOM provides 10 m resolution SAR imagery for agricultural monitoring, flood mapping, and soil moisture measurement across Argentina and the region, with particular importance for Argentina's world-leading soy, wheat, and corn production monitoring.

Internationally, INVAP has exported research nuclear reactors to Algeria, Australia, Egypt, Peru, and Saudi Arabia — arguably more successful internationally than any other nuclear reactor manufacturer outside the major nuclear states. In space, INVAP built the ALSAT-1 Earth observation satellite for Algeria and has participated in NASAt collaborative programs. INVAP's Bariloche headquarters, home to the Balseiro Institute (a world-class physics research university affiliated with the CNEA), provides continuous access to top Argentine physics and engineering talent.
