ION-X

Founded in 2021 and based in Saclay, France, ION-X develops and markets ionic liquid electrospray thrusters specifically for the small satellite market. The company’s core technology centers around a patented electrospray propulsion system utilizing ionic liquids as propellant, offering a potentially simpler, more efficient, and powerful alternative to traditional chemical propulsion. ION-X highlights key advantages including unmatched thrust and specific impulse (ISP) for its thruster class, adaptable performance based on mission requirements, and the use of a non-toxic, non-pressurized propellant.

ION-X is currently focused on bringing its 1U plug-and-play thruster to market, with plans for a product launch by mid-2025 and scaled production by the end of that year. The company has validated key milestones including completion of a qualification model, structural qualification testing, and is preparing for an on-orbit demonstration of its flight model in January 2025. Leveraging decades of research originating from CNRS focused on focused ion sources and nanoelectronics, ION-X aims to provide a competitive propulsion solution for growing small satellite constellations requiring orbit raising, station keeping, end-of-life management, and debris avoidance capabilities.
