ispace Europe

ispace Europe is the Luxembourg-based European subsidiary of ispace Inc (Tokyo Stock Exchange: 9348), the Japanese commercial lunar exploration company, established in 2017 as a strategic entity within the Grand Duchy's space resources legal ecosystem. Luxembourg enacted the SpaceResources.lu law in 2017 — the first EU legislation explicitly recognizing private rights to extract and own space resources — making it a natural European anchor for the emerging cislunar economy and attracting ispace's European headquarters to Luxembourg City.

ispace's primary program is the HAKUTO-R lunar lander series, designed to deliver commercial and government payloads to the lunar surface.

Mission 1 launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 in December 2022 and reached the Moon in April 2023, but experienced a hard landing during final descent due to a software altitude estimation error — becoming the first private spacecraft to attempt lunar landing and demonstrating the navigation and communication architecture that Mission 2 and 3 will improve upon. ispace Europe handles European customer engagement: the European Space Agency's PROSPECT ice drilling package and instruments from European national space agencies represent the addressable customer pipeline.

Luxembourg's broader space cluster — encompassing SES (major GEO/MEO operator), Orbital Solutions, Kleos Space (signals intelligence CubeSats), and the Luxembourg Space Agency — gives ispace Europe a collaborative environment and regulatory clarity. ESA's growing interest in commercial lunar transportation, modeled loosely on NASA's CLPS program, positions ispace as a potential European lunar payload delivery vehicle for ESA scientific instruments.

ispace Europe also engages in the cislunar data economy: selling data from lunar surface sensors, potentially negotiating resource extraction rights under Luxembourg/US frameworks, and developing the commercial lunar lander supply chain with European component suppliers. Competitors for European lunar payload delivery include Astrobotic (US), Intuitive Machines (US), Firefly Aerospace (US), and potential future entrants from ESA industrial consortia.
