About Johns Hopkins APL

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, Maryland is one of the largest university-affiliated research centers in the United States, with approximately 7,000 staff and $2B+ in annual research funding, operating as a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) primarily for the Department of Defense and NASA. APL has designed and built more than 70 spacecraft that have collectively visited every planet in the solar system. Its most celebrated recent missions include Parker Solar Probe (launched 2018), which became the fastest human-made object ever and touched the Sun's outer corona for the first time; DART (Double Asteroid Redirection Test, 2021-2022), which intentionally impacted asteroid Dimorphos and changed its orbit — the first planetary defense kinetic impactor demonstration in history; and the New Horizons mission, which conducted the first close flyby of Pluto (2015) and the most distant solar system object ever closely observed (2019, Arrokoth at 6.5 billion km from Earth). APL is the lead institution for Europa Clipper, NASA's flagship mission to characterize Jupiter's moon Europa as a candidate for life, with a 3 km-scale instrument payload. The lab also developed the MESSENGER Mercury orbiter, the Van Allen Probes radiation belt mission, and contributes instruments to dozens of missions led by JPL, Goddard, and international agencies. Beyond planetary science, APL is a major Navy R&D contractor for undersea systems, air defense (SM-3, SM-6 missile guidance), and hypersonics. APL's Laurel campus near Fort Meade and NSA positions it as a key national security research contractor alongside its civilian space portfolio.
