JPL - Jet Propulsion Laboratory

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is a federally funded research and development center (FFRDC) located in Pasadena, California, operated by the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) under a contract with NASA since 1958 — one of the world's premier planetary science and robotic spacecraft institutions, founded in 1936 by a group of Caltech graduate students and aeronautics pioneer Theodore von Kármán who conducted early rocket propulsion experiments in the Arroyo Seco riverbed.

JPL's defining capability is the design, fabrication, testing, and operation of robotic spacecraft for solar system exploration and Earth science. The laboratory's spacecraft heritage spans every planet in the solar system: Voyager 1 and 2 (outer solar system grand tour and now in interstellar space), the Mars Science Laboratory (Curiosity rover, Mars 2020/Perseverance rover), Mars Odyssey, Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, MAVEN, Cassini (Saturn system), Juno (Jupiter), Europa Clipper, the MESSENGER Mercury orbiter (co-managed), New Horizons (Pluto flyby), Dawn (asteroid belt), and dozens of smaller missions. In Earth science, JPL operates major instruments and satellites for climate monitoring including the GRACE/GRACE-FO gravity field measurements (tracking groundwater depletion), TOPEX/Poseidon and Jason sea level altimetry, and the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) for atmospheric temperature profiling.

JPL manages the Deep Space Network (DSN) — the global network of large-aperture radio telescopes at Goldstone (California), Madrid (Spain), and Canberra (Australia) that provide communications and tracking for all NASA planetary spacecraft and many international missions. DSN antennas up to 70 meters in diameter maintain radio contact with spacecraft billions of kilometers away.

With approximately 6,000 employees and an annual budget exceeding $3 billion, JPL employs scientists across all disciplines of planetary science (geology, geophysics, atmospheric science, astrobiology, ice physics), along with engineers in spacecraft systems, avionics, propulsion, robotics, and telecommunications. The laboratory has pioneered miniaturized planetary rovers (Sojourner, Spirit/Opportunity, Curiosity, Perseverance), planetary entry descent and landing systems (Curiosity's sky crane, Perseverance's MOXIE oxygen production), and subsurface life detection concepts for Europa's ocean missions.
