Quick Facts
About KAIST
KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) is South Korea's premier science and technology research university, founded in 1971 in Daejeon. In aerospace, KAIST has been central to South Korea's space program development: KAIST's Satellite Technology Research Center (SaTReC) developed the KAISTSat/KITSAT series of small satellites — South Korea's first indigenous satellites (KITSAT-1, 1992) — and has launched 20+ satellites. KAIST's aerospace engineering faculty collaborate extensively with KARI (Korea Aerospace Research Institute) on the NURI launch vehicle, KSLV-III development, and satellite propulsion systems. The university produces a disproportionate share of Korea's space engineering talent. KAIST spin-offs contribute to Korea's commercial space sector, and the university's satellite research center (SaTReC Initiative, now a commercial entity) became a leading small satellite manufacturer in its own right.
