Kawasaki Heavy Industries Space Division (KHI, TYO:7012) is the aerospace manufacturing arm of Japan's iconic heavy industry conglomerate, responsible for producing critical structural components for JAXA's launch vehicle programs including the H-IIA, H3, and Epsilon rockets — particularly payload fairings, interstage structures, and spacecraft payload attachment fittings. Kawasaki manufactures the payload fairing (PLF) for the H-IIA and H3 rockets — the aerodynamic nose cone that protects the satellite from aerodynamic heating and acoustic loading during atmospheric ascent, then separates at altitude to expose the payload to space. The H3's 5.4 m diameter fairing is one of Japan's largest, capable of accommodating large GEO telecommunications satellites and Earth observation spacecraft. Kawasaki also produces key structural elements of the H3's first and second stages including propellant tank sections, interstage adapters, and equipment bays — applying its aerospace manufacturing expertise in high-strength aluminum alloys, composite materials, and precision machining. For spacecraft, KHI manufactures payload adapters and separation systems that mechanically connect and then cleanly release satellites from the rocket's upper stage. Beyond launch vehicles, Kawasaki's aerospace division produces structural components for commercial aircraft (Boeing 777/787 fuselage sections) and defense platforms (P-1 maritime patrol aircraft, C-2 transport), sharing manufacturing processes and quality systems across programs. KHI participates in the lunar exploration supply chain through structural component work for JAXA's planned Lunar Polar Exploration mission (LUPEX) and H3 missions carrying lunar probes. The Kobe and Nagoya facilities operate under JISQ9100 aerospace quality management.
