About Kongsberg Space
Kongsberg Space is the space technology and ground station division of Kongsberg Gruppen (KOG), Norway's largest defense and aerospace technology conglomerate, founded in 1814 and headquartered in Kongsberg, Norway. While Kongsberg Satellite Services (KSAT) — the world's leading polar ground station network operator — is a separate joint venture, Kongsberg's broader space activities span satellite ground systems engineering, space electronics, and defense space applications.
Kongsberg's most globally significant space infrastructure contribution is its involvement in and adjacency to the Svalbard Satellite Station (SvalSat) at Longyearbyen on the Norwegian Arctic archipelago of Svalbard at 78°N. SvalSat, operated by KSAT (jointly owned by Kongsberg and Andøya Space), is the world's largest commercial polar satellite ground station, with 31 antenna systems capable of contacting any sun-synchronous LEO satellite on virtually every orbital pass — up to 12 contacts per day per satellite — due to the convergence of polar orbital ground tracks over the high Arctic. SvalSat provides TT&C and data downlink for hundreds of satellites from agencies and operators including NASA, ESA, NOAA, Planet, Airbus, and dozens more.
Beyond KSAT, Kongsberg develops space-grade electronics and software for spacecraft subsystems and ground-based satellite tracking systems. The company's defense electronics heritage — Kongsberg makes the Naval Strike Missile (NSM), NASAMS air defense systems, and the Joint Strike Missile (JSM) for F-35 — translates into radiation-tolerant electronics design and real-time software expertise applicable to satellite systems.
Kongsberg participates in Norway's national space program through contracts with the Norwegian Space Agency (NOSA) and ESA, contributing to European Earth observation infrastructure and the navigation satellite ground support segment. The company competes in the space electronics and ground systems engineering market with Thales Alenia Space, Airbus Defence and Space, and Cobham Advanced Electronic Systems.
