LambdaVision's retinal implant technology is based on bacteriorhodopsin (bR) — a light-sensitive protein found in certain archaea that acts as a natural light-to-proton pump, converting photons into electrical signals that can stimulate retinal neurons. The artificial retina consists of hundreds of alternating polymer and bacteriorhodopsin protein layers built up through a layer-by-layer deposition process where each layer must be extremely uniform for the device to produce consistent signal output across the implant's active area.

On Earth, gravity causes protein molecules to aggregate and settle unevenly during the layer-by-layer deposition process, creating non-uniform film thicknesses that reduce device performance and reproducibility. In microgravity, protein molecules remain randomly distributed in solution, depositing uniformly across the substrate surface and producing films with significantly better thickness uniformity and optical quality. ISS experiments demonstrated that microgravity-manufactured bR films had measurably superior uniformity compared to Earth-manufactured controls — providing the scientific basis for manufacturing production batches in space.

With 9 ISS missions completed by 2025, LambdaVision has validated the microgravity manufacturing advantage through repeated experiments with increasing sophistication. The company raised $7 million in additional funding in 2025 to advance toward clinical-grade implant manufacturing. LambdaVision represents a leading example of in-space manufacturing for high-value biomedical products, a market that could justify the economics of dedicated commercial space manufacturing platforms like Varda Space Industries and Space Forge are building.
