The HALO architecture positions satellites at MEO altitudes (approximately 8,000-12,000 km) — a deliberate orbital regime choice that provides lower latency than GEO satellites (which at 36,000 km impose 500ms round-trip delay that renders real-time applications unusable) while requiring fewer satellites for global coverage than LEO constellations (which need hundreds to thousands of satellites for continuous visibility). MEO is the orbital regime used by GPS/GNSS navigation satellites and by O3b/SES's MEO communications constellation (now O3b mPOWER), validating the technical and commercial case for MEO-based connectivity.
Laser Light's distinctive approach is using free-space optical (FSO) laser links for all HALO communications: optical inter-satellite links connecting each satellite to its neighbors in the constellation, and optical ground-to-satellite links (rather than RF uplinks) to ground optical terminals. FSO links offer throughput hundreds of times greater than Ka-band or Ku-band RF links for the same aperture size, operating at 1,550nm (telecommunications C-band wavelength) where mature, high-performance fiber optic laser and detector components are readily available. The optical links require precise beam pointing between fast-moving satellites (arc-second accuracy) and adaptive optics or site diversity to compensate for atmospheric turbulence on ground-to-space paths.
Laser Light Communications secured spectrum rights and conducted preliminary design work but faces the capital-intensive challenge of funding the satellite manufacturing and launch for a constellation sufficient to provide global service — requiring hundreds of millions to billions of dollars in deployment capital. Competitors in the MEO connectivity space include SES/O3b mPOWER (Ka-band RF) and Telesat Lightspeed (LEO, optical ISLs), while Starlink and OneWeb represent the dominant LEO RF-based alternatives.
