LeoLabs New Zealand operates the New Zealand Space Radar (NZSR) at Weedon, near Christchurch (43.5°S), as a Southern Hemisphere node of LeoLabs' commercial phased-array radar network for space situational awareness — filling a critical orbital coverage gap that U.S. Space Surveillance Network facilities overwhelmingly oriented in the Northern Hemisphere cannot adequately serve.

LeoLabs was founded in 2016 in Menlo Park, California, by Raytheon radar engineers who developed its phased array technology based on DARPA-funded research. The company subsequently expanded from its Texas headquarters to a global multi-site radar architecture: the Midland Space Radar (West Texas), a facility in Costa Rica (near the equator for equatorial orbit coverage), a site in Alaska (Kula) for Arctic/polar orbit visibility, and the NZSR in New Zealand, with additional European sites in development. Each phased-array radar can track thousands of objects simultaneously, providing commercial conjunction data independent of the U.S. military's classified systems.

The NZSR's southern latitude provides 12+ tracking contacts per day on polar-orbit and sun-synchronous objects — the very orbits used by most Earth observation constellations (Planet, Satellogic, ICEYE) — making it invaluable for operators maintaining close formation flying or requiring high-confidence conjunction probability calculations for maneuver planning. The radar can detect objects as small as 2 cm in diameter at LEO altitudes, far below the ~10 cm tracking threshold of the U.S. Space Fence radar on Kwajalein Atoll.

New Zealand's location is strategically aligned with Rocket Lab's launch facility at Mahia Peninsula (37.5°S): LeoLabs NZ tracks payloads immediately after launch and monitors debris from anomalous separations. Customers access LeoLabs data via API, receiving automated conjunction data messages (CDMs), probability of collision scores, and maneuver recommendations. Commercial clients include Planet Labs, Spire Global, OneWeb/Eutelsat, and government space agencies seeking commercial SSA augmentation.
