About Letara

Updated 2026-06-30

Letara is a Japanese propulsion startup spun out of Hokkaido University's space systems laboratory, developing hybrid rocket engines that use solid plastic as fuel with nitrous oxide as oxidizer. The approach aims to deliver high thrust comparable to liquid and solid systems while remaining safe, non-toxic, and inexpensive, targeting last-mile in-space transportation for small satellites and orbital transfer vehicles, with a re-ignition capability. Founded by co-CEOs Landon Kamps and Shota Hirai with CTO Professor Harunori Nagata, Letara has raised over 1.1 billion yen and was selected as a J-Startup company by Japan's METI.
