About Lloyd's of London Space

Lloyd's of London is the world's oldest and largest specialist insurance and reinsurance market — not a single company but a marketplace of competing syndicates and underwriters operating under a centuries-old framework, founded in 1688 in Edward Lloyd's coffee house. Lloyd's underwriters placed the world's first commercial satellite insurance policy in 1965, covering the Early Bird (Intelsat I) communications satellite, establishing what has grown into a multi-billion-dollar annual space insurance market. Today Lloyd's syndicates underwrite the majority of the world's commercial satellite insurance: pre-launch terrestrial coverage (factory-to-launch-pad), launch and early orbit coverage (the highest-risk phase), and in-orbit life coverage against on-orbit failure, solar storm damage, and debris collision. The market recently developed the Llift Space product — a simplified parametric satellite insurance product targeting NewSpace operators with satellites under 300kg, offering up to $25M coverage capacity with streamlined underwriting tailored to the commercial smallsat market's faster production cycles and lower insurance budgets. Lloyd's space insurance is placed through specialist brokers including Marsh, Aon, Global Aerospace, and STAR Space. Participating syndicates include Atrium, Talbot, Beazley, and others with dedicated space underwriting expertise, collectively providing liquidity for the insurance of thousands of annual satellite launches.
