Quick Facts
About Loft Orbital France
Loft Orbital France is the Toulouse-based European engineering hub and operational entity of Loft Orbital Solutions — a space infrastructure company (founded 2017) providing Space Infrastructure as a Service that enables organizations to operate satellite payloads in orbit without designing, building, or operating their own satellite platform. Toulouse's presence connects Loft Orbital to the European aerospace ecosystem, Airbus Defence & Space's satellite manufacturing facilities, and CNES's technical expertise.
Loft Orbital's business model — sometimes called 'virtual satellite' or 'payload-as-a-service' — standardizes the satellite bus into a multi-payload hosting platform: each Loft satellite carries multiple independent customer payloads simultaneously, with Loft handling all satellite bus engineering (structure, power, thermal, ADCS, propulsion, communications), launch procurement (through SpaceX Transporter rideshare and other providers), mission operations (TT&C, orbit maintenance, data relay), and regulatory compliance on behalf of payload customers.
Payload customers define the instrument or technology they want to operate in orbit, integrate it to Loft's standard payload interface specification, and receive data downlinks from the bus — without the years-long satellite development program traditionally required.
As of 2025, Loft Orbital has deployed five satellites with approximately 30 more in production backlog valued at roughly $500 million in aggregate contracts, targeting customers from NASA to Eutelsat to defense intelligence agencies. The YAM (Yet Another Mission) satellite bus series represents successive generations of the platform, with YAM-6 incorporating AI-enabled onboard computing and always-on connectivity for real-time payload event detection and response.
Toulouse, as headquarters of ArianeGroup (Ariane launch vehicle prime), Airbus DS satellite manufacturing, Thales Alenia Space operations, and CNES's primary technical center, provides Loft Orbital France with direct proximity to the European aerospace supply chain for components, integration services, and the European institutional customer relationships that are distinct from Loft's San Francisco-headquartered commercial and US government customer base.
Competitors in the payload hosting/space-as-a-service model include Satellogic's data infrastructure, D-Orbit's ION carrier platforms, and SpaceFlight Inc., though Loft's standardized multi-payload bus with full operations management is a distinct offering.
