Lumi Space is a London, UK-based satellite laser ranging (SLR) services company founded in 2018 providing commercial precision orbit determination using ground-based pulsed laser ranging — transmitting short nanosecond laser pulses from ground stations to satellites equipped with retroreflector arrays, measuring the round-trip light travel time to determine satellite range with centimeter-level accuracy (compared to meter-level accuracy from GPS-based or Doppler tracking methods).

Satellite laser ranging works by firing a short, precisely timed laser pulse from a ground telescope toward a satellite carrying a retroreflector array — an array of corner cube prisms that reflect laser light precisely back toward its source regardless of incidence angle. By measuring the two-way time of flight with sub-nanosecond precision (using event timers accurate to ~10 picoseconds), and knowing the speed of light, the satellite-to-ground range is determined with centimeter accuracy. Repeating this measurement over multiple ground station passes allows precise reconstruction of the satellite's orbit, providing an absolute reference for validating and calibrating GPS/GNSS-derived orbits, satellite clock corrections, and precise orbit determination (POD) for altimetry, gravity field mapping, and radar science missions.

The International Laser Ranging Service (ILRS), a global network of government-operated SLR stations, has historically provided satellite laser ranging as a scientific service for geodetic and orbital reference frame maintenance. Lumi Space positions itself as a commercial SLR service provider — offering precision ranging as a paid service to satellite operators who need precise orbit determination for applications including: collision avoidance (more accurate orbital predictions extend conjunction warning time), Earth observation image georeferencing (sub-meter geolocation accuracy requires precise spacecraft position), and satellite calibration and validation.

The 1,000x accuracy advantage cited (centimeter vs meter-level) reflects the comparison between SLR and conventional tracking radar.
