About MDA Space
MDA Space (TSX: MDA) is a leading Canadian space technology company with over 50 years of heritage building systems that operate in some of the most demanding environments on Earth and in space. The company is best known for developing Canadarm (Space Shuttle) and Canadarm2 (International Space Station), iconic robotic systems that placed Canada among the world's space powers.
MDA's three business lines are robotics and space operations (including Canadarm3, originally built for the Lunar Gateway and since August 2026 being redirected by the Canadian Space Agency toward lunar surface logistics for Artemis), geointelligence (processing and analyzing imagery from RADARSAT and other satellite constellations), and satellite systems (manufacturing communications and Earth observation satellites). MDA is the satellite manufacturer for Telesat Lightspeed's LEO constellation and builds satellite components for SatixFy, Globalstar, and others. The company went public on the Toronto Stock Exchange in 2021, raising $400M in its IPO, and employs more than 4,000 people across Canada, the UK and the US.
Products and product lines
| Product | Line | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Canadarm3 | Space robotics / lunar surface logistics | Robotic system originally developed for NASA's Lunar Gateway; on 6 August 2026 MDA said Canada's Space Agency intends to repurpose the Canadarm3 investment toward lunar surface logistics for the Artemis program rather than the Gateway arm alone. |
| MDA AURORA | Software-defined digital satellite platform | Digital beam-forming satellite line with dynamically adjustable coverage and bandwidth; underpins MDA's $1.1 billion Globalstar constellation contract and a $474 million August 2026 award to add 27 satellites (198 to 225) with military Ka-band payloads to the Telesat Lightspeed constellation. |
| MDA CHORUS | Earth observation satellite constellation / geointelligence | Next-generation dual-band (C-band/X-band) SAR constellation offering a 700 km imaging swath at sub-metre resolution; MDA opened its mission control centre in St-Bruno-de-Montarville, Quebec on 11 August 2026, targeting launch in late 2026 and commercial service in early 2027. |
| Blue Canyon Technologies (acquired) | Small satellite manufacturing | US spacecraft and component manufacturer (85+ spacecraft launched, 400+ staff in Denver) that MDA agreed to acquire for US$620 million on 19 June 2026, expanding MDA's US defence market access. |
| Collecte Localisation Satellites (CLS) (agreed acquisition) | AI-driven Earth observation analytics (acquired) | French geointelligence and satellite-IoT analytics firm (14,000+ customers, ~1,200 staff); MDA entered a firm offer on 8 July 2026 to acquire roughly 70% for EUR 567 million, with CNES retaining about 30%. |
