Quick Facts
About Miles Space
Miles Space develops electric propulsion for small satellites, most notably a water-vapour plasma thruster that operates at power levels low enough that the company reports scepticism from the industry. Water is attractive as a propellant because it is non-toxic, cheap, easily stored and avoids the handling restrictions attached to xenon and hydrazine.
The company was founded in 2015 by Alexander Wingeier and Wesley Faler and is based in Tampa, Florida. Its Poseidon M1.5 thruster fits within a single cubesat unit; in testing conducted in September 2024 aboard a European satellite, it demonstrated the ability to lower a spacecraft's orbit, one of the qualifying capabilities for post-mission disposal compliance. The company also works on space communications.
Miles Space was acquired by RocketStar in January 2024. Its thruster development was earlier boosted by a NASA prize challenge.
