Mithril Technologies

Mithril Technologies is a US early-stage startup and Techstars Space 2024 graduate developing deployable mesh reflector antennas with active surface correction capabilities for satellite communications and Earth observation applications. Deployable mesh antennas — large, lightweight parabolic reflectors that fold for launch and unfurl in orbit — are the standard architecture for large aperture antennas on communications satellites (DirecTV, SiriusXM) and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems.

However, thermal gradients in orbit and manufacturing tolerances can distort the mesh surface from its ideal parabolic shape, degrading antenna gain and beam pointing accuracy. Mithril's differentiating technology is active surface correction: actuators embedded in the antenna structure that can dynamically reshape the reflector surface post-deployment to compensate for distortions and optimize beam characteristics.

This enables both atmospheric monitoring applications (where precise beam shape affects measurement accuracy for weather or climate science payloads) and communications (where beam shaping can dynamically adjust coverage to match traffic demand). The company raised $320K in its initial seed round and, through Techstars Space 2024, has access to US Space Force acquisition pathways for potential defense applications of reconfigurable aperture technology.
