Quick Facts
About Morocco Space Program
Morocco's space program, operating under the Royal Centre for Remote Sensing (CRTS — Centre Royal de Télédétection Spatiale) based in Rabat, represents one of Africa's most advanced national satellite programs. The program's flagship achievement is the Mohammed VI satellite series: two high-resolution Earth observation satellites built through a major French partnership. Mohammed VI-A was launched in November 2017 and Mohammed VI-B in November 2018, both aboard Arianespace Vega rockets from the Guiana Space Centre.
The satellites, developed by a consortium including Airbus Defence and Space and Thales Alenia Space, provide 70cm panchromatic resolution optical imagery — performance comparable to commercial operators like Airbus's Pléiades constellation. A distinctive feature of the program is technology transfer: Moroccan engineers trained at Airbus and Thales facilities in France during the satellite's development as part of an explicit capacity-building agreement, gradually building domestic expertise in satellite design and operations.
The satellites support Morocco's national priorities including precision agriculture for the wheat-critical Meseta region, urban growth mapping of cities like Casablanca, border surveillance, disaster response (floods, earthquakes), and the country's ambitious Vision 2030 development planning. Morocco has leveraged its geographic position between Europe and Africa to participate in EuroMed space cooperation and position itself as a potential hub for commercial space activities in Northwest Africa.
