About Morpheus Space
Morpheus Space, headquartered in Dresden, Germany and founded in 2018 as a spinout from the Technische Universität Dresden (TU Dresden), is a European electric propulsion startup developing scalable ion propulsion systems for small satellites — enabling orbit-raising, station-keeping, constellation deployment, collision avoidance maneuvers, and controlled deorbit for satellites ranging from 1U cubesats to 150 kg smallsats.
Morpheus's flagship propulsion technology is the nanoFEEP (nanoField Emission Electric Propulsion) thruster — an indium-fueled electrospray thruster that ionizes and accelerates liquid indium metal using high-voltage electric fields at the tips of individually machined microtip emitter arrays. Indium is an ideal propellant for miniaturized electric propulsion: it is a liquid metal at modest temperatures (~160°C), has low vapor pressure enabling long propellant storage without leakage, and produces a high charge-to-mass ratio ion beam with specific impulse of 4,000-8,000 seconds — an order of magnitude better than chemical propulsion.
The nanoFEEP's key differentiator is extreme scalability: arrays of individual emitter tips can be tiled to produce thrust ranging from micronewtons (for a single 1U cubesat) to millinewtons (for a 100+ kg constellation satellite) from the same core technology.
Morpheus markets its technology under the 'ThrusterPack' brand — an integrated propulsion module combining nanoFEEP thrusters, propellant tanks, power processing units (PPUs), and flight software in a single bolt-on assembly that minimizes satellite integration complexity. The company has flown technology demonstrations and secured contracts with European constellation operators and institutional customers through ESA's OSIP (Open Space Innovation Platform) and national research programs.
Morpheus competes with Enpulsion (Austria, also indium-based electrospray), ThrustMe (France, iodine gridded ion), and Aliena (Singapore, Hall-effect) in the European and global smallsat electric propulsion market. Dresden's technical university ecosystem and Germany's DLR research infrastructure provide Morpheus with an engineering talent pipeline and research partnership access.
