About Motiv Space Systems
Motiv Space Systems, headquartered in Pasadena, California and founded in 2014 by a team of engineers who previously worked at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), designs and manufactures robotic arms, end-effectors, mechanisms, and actuation systems for planetary surface rovers, spacecraft, and in-orbit servicing vehicles — combining deep heritage in NASA planetary mission hardware with a commercial product model that brings flight-proven manipulation technology to new space customers.
Motiv's highest-profile achievement is the robotic arm of NASA's Mars 2020 Perseverance rover — the 2.1-meter, 5-degree-of-freedom arm that positions the turret-mounted science instruments (PIXL X-ray spectrometer, SHERLOC Raman spectrometer, WATSON camera, and the coring drill) against rock samples for in-situ analysis and extracts rock cores for the Mars Sample Return campaign. Motiv designed, manufactured, and tested the arm's joint actuators, structural links, and wiring harnesses to operate in Mars's harsh environment (-80°C to +20°C ambient, 600 Pa atmosphere, intense UV and radiation) with required position repeatability of less than 1 mm after multi-month transit and entry, descent, and landing vibrations. Perseverance has operated its arm continuously since February 2021 and has collected over 20 core samples.
Beyond Perseverance, Motiv has developed robotic manipulation hardware for lunar landers, on-orbit servicing demonstration missions, and commercial in-space applications. The company's xLink manipulator — a commercial derivative of its JPL-heritage arm architecture — targets on-orbit satellite servicing, space station berthing, and in-space manufacturing customers who require robust manipulation capability without the cost of a fully custom JPL development program.
Motiv competes with MDA Space Robots (Canada, builders of Canadarm), Honeybee Robotics, and German-based DLR Institute of Robotics in the space robotic manipulation market.
