Nara Space Technology is a Busan, South Korea-based small satellite manufacturer and operator founded in 2015, developing CubeSat platforms across 6U, 12U, and 16U form factors and building two distinct satellite constellations: the Observer series for multispectral Earth observation and the NarSha series for methane greenhouse gas monitoring. The company achieved a notable milestone as the first Korean private company to successfully launch a 16U optical Earth observation satellite — demonstrating Korean private sector capability to build and operate functional imaging CubeSats at a scale larger than the standard 6U platforms that had dominated the domestic market.

Nara Space's NarSha methane monitoring constellation directly addresses one of the most commercially and environmentally timely applications in the EO market: atmospheric methane (CH₄) detection and attribution. Methane is approximately 80x more potent than CO₂ as a greenhouse gas over a 20-year timeframe, and industrial sources — oil and gas infrastructure, livestock operations, coal mines, and waste sites — are responsible for a large fraction of total methane emissions that are frequently underreported in national inventories. Satellites equipped with shortwave infrared (SWIR) spectral channels can detect methane column concentrations above point sources, enabling operators and regulators to identify and hold accountable specific emission sources at field scale.

The commercial demand for methane monitoring data has grown rapidly with carbon accounting regulations, Scope 1 emissions disclosure requirements for public companies, and the Global Methane Pledge's signatories committing to 30% emission reductions by 2030. NarSha data products would serve carbon market operators, environmental regulators, energy companies conducting emissions compliance monitoring, and climate researchers.

Nara Space's Observer constellation provides multispectral EO data for Korean government customers and international commercial applications including agriculture, land use change, and urban monitoring. The company's Busan base connects to South Korea's shipbuilding and industrial heritage while accessing KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) and Seoul National University aerospace engineering talent. Nara Space competes with GHGSat (Canada, methane monitoring) and Satellogic for the small satellite EO and emissions monitoring market.
