About NARSS
The National Authority for Remote Sensing and Space Sciences (NARSS) is an Egyptian government body headquartered in Cairo, with a satellite receiving station in Aswan. It traces its origins to 1973, when it was created as the Egyptian Remote Sensing Center under a joint American-Egyptian project, and was formally reorganized as an authority under the Ministry of Scientific Research in 1994. NARSS has built and operated Egypt's first three Earth-observation satellites. EgyptSat 1, a 100-kilogram multispectral imaging satellite, launched in April 2007 and lost contact in July 2010.
EgyptSat 2, built with Russia's RKK Energia, launched in April 2014 but was lost in April 2015 after a flight-control-system failure; its replacement, EgyptSat-A (also known as MisrSat-A), was jointly built by NARSS and RKK Energia, with imaging-payload components from Belarus's Peleng and NIRUP Geoinformation Systems, and launched from Baikonur in February 2019 as Egypt's third Earth remote-sensing satellite. NARSS uses its satellite imagery and ground infrastructure for environmental monitoring, agriculture, water-resource management and disaster response across Egypt.
It now operates within the broader institutional framework of the Egyptian Space Agency (EgSA), created in 2018, but remains a distinct, separately founded organization with its own satellite-operations history predating EgSA by more than four decades. NARSS is state-funded and does not sell commercial imagery services at scale.
