About NASA Glenn Research Center

NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC), located in Cleveland, Ohio, is NASA's primary center for aerospace propulsion and power research. Glenn has led development of electric propulsion (the Hall-effect thruster for Dawn spacecraft, Solar Electric Propulsion/SEP for Gateway's Power and Propulsion Element), solar power systems, fuel cells, and aircraft/spacecraft engine research going back to its NACA origins (1941). The center's major space contributions include developing the ion propulsion technology that powered the Dawn mission to Vesta and Ceres, SEP work enabling deep space missions with reduced propellant mass, and communications technology (including disruption-tolerant networking/DTN for deep space relay). Glenn operates unique facilities: a world-class vacuum chamber (Space Power Facility at Plum Brook Station), electric propulsion test facilities, and cryogenic fuel research equipment. The center plays a critical role in NASA's future deep space propulsion architecture.
