The Neumann Drive operates by generating a cathodic arc discharge that vaporizes and ionizes metal from a solid rod or disc propellant source. The resulting metal plasma is electrostatically accelerated to produce thrust with specific impulse (Isp) values ranging from approximately 1,000 to over 14,000 seconds depending on propellant material and discharge parameters — making it competitive with or exceeding gridded ion engines for high-Isp mission profiles. The system requires no pressurized propellant tanks, greatly simplifying spacecraft integration compared to Hall thrusters or ion engines that require xenon or krypton storage.

The debris-as-fuel concept addresses the space sustainability narrative: if future debris remediation missions could capture and process metallic debris (aluminum, titanium, or steel structural components from defunct satellites) into propellant for subsequent missions, it would close a resource loop that makes debris removal economically self-sustaining. While operationally complex, this vision positions the Neumann Drive as a technology aligned with the space sustainability regulatory momentum.

Neumann Space has performed ground test demonstrations and is developing flight-qualified versions for cubesat and microsatellite platforms.
