Northrop Grumman Innovation Systems

Northrop Grumman Innovation Systems (NGIS) is the space and launch vehicle division created in 2018 when Northrop Grumman Corporation acquired Orbital ATK for $9.2 billion — absorbing one of the most significant mid-tier aerospace companies in U.S. history and its portfolio of launch vehicles, spacecraft, satellite buses, and solid rocket motor production into the Northrop Grumman Space Systems organization headquartered in Dulles, Virginia.

Orbital ATK itself was formed in 2015 through the merger of Orbital Sciences Corporation (founded 1982 as a pioneer in small commercial satellites and medium-lift rockets, creator of Pegasus air-launched rocket and the Antares orbital rocket) and ATK Aerospace Systems (the nation's largest solid rocket motor manufacturer, producer of Space Shuttle SRBs and subsequently the SLS Solid Rocket Boosters). This merger united rocket manufacturing and solid propulsion under one roof before Northrop's acquisition integrated it further into a defense/space prime.

Antares rocket: a medium-lift launcher (8,000 kg to LEO) launching from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility on Wallops Island, Virginia — the only orbital launch site on the US East Coast. Antares uses a Ukrainian Yuzhnoye/Yuzmash-designed first stage structure and originally flew with Russian-supplied RD-181 engines (two per first stage). Russia's February 2022 invasion of Ukraine triggered a supply chain crisis: Northrop suspended Antares flights and contracted with Firefly Aerospace to integrate the Miranda engine (two per stage) as a replacement, with flights expected to resume in 2025. The Cygnus spacecraft — Antares' primary payload — is an uncrewed ISS cargo resupply vehicle carrying pressurized cargo, crew provisions, science experiments, and CubeSat deployers; it deorbits destructively in the Pacific after undocking. Cygnus has completed 20+ successful ISS resupply missions under NASA's CRS (Commercial Resupply Services) program.

ATK heritage solid rocket motors power SLS Block 1 (twin 5-segment RSRMV boosters providing 75% of total thrust at liftoff), Minuteman III ICBMs (third-stage motors), Trident II D5 submarine-launched ballistic missiles, and numerous smaller tactical and space access motors. The GEOStar and LEOStar small satellite bus platforms (derived from Orbital Sciences heritage) continue under Northrop Grumman for NASA science and commercial satellite missions.
