About Nigerian Communications Satellite Ltd

NIGCOMSAT (Nigerian Communications Satellite Ltd) is a Nigerian government-owned satellite operator established in 2006 and headquartered in Abuja, operating the NIGCOMSAT-1R geostationary communications satellite to provide telecommunications, broadcasting, and broadband connectivity across Africa and beyond. Nigeria's first satellite, NIGCOMSAT-1 (launched 2007 by China's Long March 3B), suffered a critical C-band transponder failure in 2008 leaving it non-operational. Its replacement, NIGCOMSAT-1R, was built by China Great Wall Industry Corporation and launched in December 2011, restoring service with C-band, Ku-band, Ka-band, and L-band capacity covering Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and parts of Asia. The satellite provides services for direct-to-home television broadcasting, VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) internet connectivity for businesses and government agencies, e-government applications (connecting government offices in rural areas), and mobile telephony backhaul infrastructure. As one of Africa's largest economies and most populous nations, Nigeria's investment in domestic satellite infrastructure reflects the recognition that GEO satellite broadband is the only economically viable last-mile connectivity solution for the vast rural regions across Nigeria and neighboring West African countries. NIGCOMSAT is partly owned by the Chinese entity that built the satellite, reflecting the financing arrangement typical of Chinese space export programs in Africa.
