Northstar Earth & Space

NorthStar Earth & Space, founded in 2015 and headquartered in Montreal, Canada, is developing the first commercial Space Situational Awareness (SSA) constellation that monitors Earth's orbital environment from space rather than from ground-based radar and optical telescopes. Unlike ground radar systems that track objects based on radar cross-section (RCS) — missing small debris below approximately 10 cm in LEO — space-based optical sensors can detect objects by reflected sunlight with different size thresholds and at orbital altitudes where ground radars have degraded coverage. NorthStar's service architecture provides conjunction assessment data, proximity warning notifications, orbit determination products, and space weather context to satellite operators and government space operations centers.

With $134M in Canadian and international funding — including from the Canadian Space Agency, the Government of Canada's Strategic Innovation Fund, and private investors — NorthStar holds patented SSA technology covering its space-based observation geometry, multi-sensor data fusion approaches, and AI-driven analytics pipeline. The AI and big data analytics layer processes the high-volume tracking data from the constellation to produce actionable collision risk assessments and priority alerts rather than raw tracking catalogs.

NorthStar serves commercial satellite operators, national space agencies, and government defense customers seeking independent SSA data beyond the U.S. Space Surveillance Network (SSN) catalog maintained by LeoLabs. The company competes with LeoLabs (ground-based radar), ExoAnalytic Solutions (ground-based optical), and government SSA services, differentiating through its space-based vantage point and its partnership with Spire's existing orbital infrastructure.
