About Northwood Space
Northwood Space is an El Segundo, California ground segment infrastructure company founded in 2022 that operates a shared, operator-neutral phased array ground station network for satellite communications — providing commercial satellite operators with downlink, uplink, and telemetry/tracking/command (TT&C) services without requiring them to build, own, or operate their own antenna infrastructure.
Northwood is co-founded by Bridgit Mendler (CEO) — a Harvard Law School JD graduate (2020) who gained public recognition as a Disney Channel actress before pivoting to space entrepreneurship — and Shaun Sidey (CTO), a satellite systems engineer. Mendler's public profile and network accelerated investor engagement: the company raised a $30 million Series A led by Alpine Space Ventures and Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), one of the most prominent venture firms, whose space investment thesis centers on the infrastructure layer enabling the proliferated LEO economy.
Phased array antennas are the key technology differentiation: unlike traditional parabolic dish antennas that mechanically track satellites — requiring motors, actuators, and moving parts that introduce latency, maintenance burden, and failure risk — phased arrays electronically steer beams at microsecond timescales by controlling phase delays across hundreds of antenna elements. This enables simultaneous multi-beam tracking of multiple satellites, instant handover between adjacent satellites in a LEO constellation, and the high contact rates required for latency-sensitive applications. For a LEO satellite at 500 km altitude, each ground station has approximately 8-12 minutes of contact per pass; phased arrays can maximize data throughput within that window.
The shared infrastructure model serves satellite operators who cannot justify the capital cost of building a global owned antenna network — particularly startups with fewer than 10 satellites where owned ground infrastructure would be uneconomic. Northwood's neutral-carrier positioning is structurally important: unlike AWS Ground Station (Amazon) or Intelsat ground services, Northwood has no competing satellite operations that create conflicts of interest with customer data. Competitors include AWS Ground Station, KSAT (Norwegian, 70+ global sites), Leaf Space (European), Atlas Space Operations, and RBC Signals.
