Nu Quantum

Nu Quantum is a Cambridge, UK-based deep-tech company developing photonic quantum networking hardware spun out of research at the Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge. The company's core technology focuses on single-photon sources, detectors, and routing components — the building blocks of quantum repeater networks that could enable quantum-secure communication over intercontinental distances. Terrestrial fiber-based quantum key distribution (QKD) is limited to roughly 500 km due to photon loss, and cannot be simply amplified (the no-cloning theorem prevents classical signal repeating).

Satellite-based quantum communication, demonstrated by China's Micius satellite achieving QKD over ~1,200 km ground-to-satellite links, is the leading approach to long-range quantum-secure links. Nu Quantum's photonic components (high-efficiency single-photon emitters, superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors) serve as enabling hardware for both ground-based quantum network nodes and potential space payloads.

The company completed a Series A funding round and works with UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), the National Quantum Technologies Programme, and partners in the European Quantum Internet Alliance building toward a future quantum internet connecting satellites and ground stations.
