Orbit Beyond, based in New Jersey, is a NASA Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) contractor developing modular lunar landers with 300+ kg payload delivery capacity to the lunar surface — one of NASA's 14 vetted CLPS providers authorized to compete for NASA payload delivery task orders under the agency's commercial lunar surface services strategy.

Orbit Beyond's lunar lander product line includes Z-01 (smaller configuration) and Z-02 (larger configuration with 300+ kg surface payload capacity), designed with configurable architecture to accommodate diverse NASA science payloads, commercial customer cargo, and technology demonstrations. The modular design philosophy allows payload customers to specify environmental requirements (thermal, vibration, power interfaces, lunar surface duration) and receive a matched lander configuration rather than a one-size-fits-all delivery system.

Orbit Beyond was awarded a NASA CLPS TO1 (Task Order 1) contract in 2019 for a lunar surface mission but terminated the contract in 2019 before execution, citing schedule and technical challenges that prevented meeting the ambitious 2020 delivery timeline NASA had specified. This setback required the company to reorganize, refocus its technical approach, and rebuild stakeholder confidence — a process that took several years. The company has since refocused on realistic 2029/2030 south polar mission timelines aligned with NASA's Artemis program interest in persistent south polar surface access for ice prospecting and crew landing site preparation.

The lunar south pole represents NASA's priority target because water ice deposits confirmed by LCROSS and LRO in permanently shadowed craters provide potential in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) propellant for sustained lunar surface operations. Orbit Beyond's south polar mission targeting aligns with CLPS's role as reconnaissance and infrastructure preparation for crewed Artemis surface missions.
