Orbital Insight, founded in 2013 and headquartered in Palo Alto, California, was one of the original geospatial AI companies applying computer vision and machine learning to commercial satellite imagery for economic intelligence applications — pioneering the satellite-derived alternative data market for hedge funds, commodity traders, and government intelligence customers before the sector matured into its current competitive landscape.

Orbital Insight's original flagship product was vehicle counting from parking lot imagery: using high-resolution satellite images of retail store and mall parking lots, counting cars provided a proxy for consumer traffic that predicted retailer revenue one to four weeks before official earnings releases. The same methodology extended to oil storage monitoring (floating roof shadow analysis for Cushing, Oklahoma crude inventory estimation), port activity measurement (container stack counting), and manufacturing facility utilization (thermal imaging and truck count proxies for factory output). These applications formed the foundation of the commercial geospatial alternative data market that now includes dozens of competitors.

Orbital Insight's GO platform provided a standardized API for accessing its geospatial intelligence products, enabling financial customers to integrate satellite-derived signals into quantitative trading models without building their own computer vision pipelines. Government and intelligence community customers used similar capabilities for supply chain monitoring, military activity detection, and economic sanctions enforcement verification — tracking Chinese rare earth mine production, North Korean port activity, and Iranian oil tanker movements.

The company raised over $100 million from Sequoia Capital, Google Ventures, and other investors, becoming one of the best-funded geospatial AI companies of its era. After pioneering the market, Orbital Insight faced competition from Maxar Analytics, Planet Labs analytics, and specialized newcomers while transitioning from selling raw data products to analytics-as-a-service. The company was acquired by Seerist in 2022, integrating its geospatial capabilities into Seerist's broader intelligence platform.
