Overview Energy is a U.S.-based space-based solar power (SBSP) company developing geostationary satellites that convert captured sunlight into near-infrared laser beams and transmit the energy wirelessly to specialized photovoltaic receiver farms on Earth — a concept that could provide clean, continuous baseload power generation independent of weather or day-night cycles that limit conventional terrestrial solar.

The company's technical approach uses near-infrared laser wavelengths (around 1,000-1,100 nm) rather than the microwave transmission used in NASA's classic SBSP studies, arguing that laser power beaming can achieve higher spatial concentration (smaller receiver footprint), better power density at the receiver, and compatibility with existing high-efficiency silicon and III-V solar cell technology.

In December 2025, Overview Energy achieved what it described as the world's first high-power wireless power transmission demonstration while in motion — a ground-based validation of the tracking and pointing accuracy needed for satellite-to-ground power beaming where both transmitter and receiver have relative motion. The company raised $20M from climate technology and deep tech investors, reflecting the growing investor appetite for long-duration clean energy solutions.

Overview Energy's vision targets the massive baseload power market that intermittent renewables cannot economically address without storage — if technically and economically viable, SBSP could theoretically provide continuous clean energy anywhere on Earth. The company competes with UK SBSP concepts (CASSIOPeiA helical satellite by Space Solar), Caltech's SSPP (Space Solar Power Project), and the Japanese JAXA SBSP roadmap, all targeting commercial SBSP demonstration in the 2030s.
