Quick Facts
About Pale Blue
Pale Blue is a Kashiwa, Japan propulsion startup (founded 2020, University of Tokyo spin-off) developing water-based resistojet propulsion systems for CubeSats and small satellites. The company's thrusters electrolyze water into hydrogen and oxygen on-demand, then combust them to produce thrust — or alternatively use resistive heating to vaporize water into steam for gentler maneuvering. Water is an ideal propellant for small satellites: it is non-toxic, not pressurized at room temperature, exempt from hazardous materials transport regulations, and has good volumetric density.
Pale Blue has demonstrated the technology on orbit through in-space testing and has commercial customers requiring propulsion for CubeSat constellation stationkeeping and deorbit compliance. The company competes with Bradford Space's Comet thruster and Enpulsion's FEEP systems in the 6U-16U propulsion market.
