Peenemünde Historical Technical Museum

The Peenemünde Historical Technical Museum (Historisch-Technisches Museum Peenemünde, HTM Peenemünde) is a technical history museum opened in 1991 on the island of Usedom in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany, located on the site of the Heeresversuchsanstalt Peenemünde (HVA) — the secret German rocket research and development facility where the V-2 (Aggregat 4) ballistic missile was developed and first flown to the edge of space in October 1942, making it the first human-built object to reach the Kármán line altitude.

The museum preserves the history of one of the most significant — and morally complex — sites in the history of spaceflight. Under Wernher von Braun and Walter Dornberger, Peenemünde's engineers achieved genuine technical breakthroughs between 1937 and 1945: the A-4/V-2 was the world's first large liquid-propellant rocket, reaching altitudes of 80–100 km, using turbopump-fed ethanol/liquid oxygen propulsion, and demonstrating gyroscopic guidance that inspired all subsequent ballistic missiles and space launch vehicles. These advances directly enabled the space age — many Peenemünde engineers (von Braun's team) later developed the Redstone and Saturn rockets at NASA.

But the V-2 program was also built on the forced labor of concentration camp prisoners — particularly from KZ Dora/Mittelbau, where approximately 10,000–20,000 people perished in underground V-2 production tunnels, more deaths than the weapon caused in combat. The museum addresses this duality directly, documenting both the engineering achievement and the human cost — including a permanent exhibition on the forced laborers and the ethical obligations of technology.

The museum site includes the preserved power station (now the main exhibit hall), outdoor rocket exhibits including V-2 replicas and an R-7 ICBM, historic launch pad area, and technical exhibits on liquid rocket propulsion, German WWII rocket programs, and the postwar space programs that V-2 technology seeded. HTM Peenemünde serves approximately 200,000 visitors annually and is an important site for German and international aerospace history education.
