Penn State Aerospace's most prominent research identity is in propulsion and combustion: the department operates the High Bay Research Laboratory for large-scale jet and rocket engine testing, the Propulsion Engineering Research Center (PERC) with Navy and Air Force funding for turbine engine cooling and advanced combustion, and active research in solid rocket propulsion, hybrid motors, and liquid rocket combustion instability — making Penn State one of the few universities with sustained experimental rocket propulsion research programs comparable in scale to university programs at Purdue and the University of Alabama Huntsville. Space systems research at Penn State includes CubeSat development through the student-run LION (Laboratory for Intelligent Net-Centric Research) program and the interdisciplinary Center for Space Physics and Aeronomy Research (CSPAM) which contributes instruments to ionospheric and magnetospheric missions.
