About PION Labs

Updated 2026-06-30

PION Labs is a Brazilian aerospace startup founded in December 2019 in São Paulo by Calvin Souto Trubiene, Gabriel Lopes Yamato, and João Pedro Vilas Boas Silva, working to lower the cost of space access for Brazil and other emerging space nations. The company built the hybrid-propellant Quark sounding rocket and, in January 2022, launched its PION-BR1 CubeSat aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 Transporter rideshare mission as the first Brazilian satellite fully developed by a private company.

In December 2023, PION Labs conducted the first rocket launch from a Brazilian site performed entirely by a private startup, flying its PESL sounding rocket with seven educational satellites and recovering the vehicle with support from the Brazilian Air Force and Navy. The company also organizes the Latin American Space Challenge (LASC), billed as the region's largest experimental rocket and satellite engineering competition, and is developing a follow-on PION-BR2 CubeSat targeted for launch from the Alcântara Launch Center.
