About Planetary Utilities

Updated 2026-06-30

Planetary Utilities is a California space software company building Starforge, a digital engineering platform that puts a natural-language interface over the modelling stack used to design spacecraft and missions. It connects to digital twin models, simulations and system data, and integrates AI with SysML v2 so engineers can query and modify complex system models conversationally.

The company was founded in 2023, with the stated aim of making space missions tractable for smaller teams by unifying tools and information that are otherwise siloed across separate applications. Chief executive Johannes Gross holds a doctorate from the University of Stuttgart and spent seven years as a technologist and engineer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory; chief software engineer Robert Karban also came from JPL and co-founded OpenMBEE.

Planetary Utilities cites engineers at The Aerospace Corporation, Airbus and SAIC among its users, and was selected for the Seraphim accelerator alongside nine other companies. It was a Startup Space 2026 finalist.
