Pramatra Space

Pramatra Space is an Indian quantum communication company and Techstars Space 2024 graduate developing miniaturized quantum key distribution (QKD) payloads for satellites, targeting the enterprise cybersecurity market facing long-term threats from cryptographically relevant quantum computers (CRQCs) that could break current RSA/ECC encryption protecting financial transactions, healthcare records, and government communications. The company's differentiating approach is the development of photonic integrated circuit (PIC) chips — compact, low-power QKD transmitter and receiver hardware fabricated using semiconductor photonics processes rather than the bulky, expensive laboratory optical bench systems used by first-generation QKD satellites. PIC-based QKD would reduce the size, weight, and power (SWaP) of QKD satellite payloads from tens of kilograms to potentially under one kilogram, enabling integration on CubeSat-class satellites and dramatically reducing the cost of satellite-based QKD infrastructure. Pramatra Space targets Indian enterprises and government agencies as primary customers, operating within India's rapidly growing quantum technology ecosystem funded through the National Quantum Mission (NQM), which allocated ₹6,003 crore (~$720M) for quantum research and industry development including satellite QKD. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has separately conducted QKD experiments aboard Indian satellites, providing proof-of-concept validation for the technology in the Indian space context. Pramatra Space has established research partnerships with Indian quantum technology institutes and participates in the IN-SPACe commercial space enabling framework that provides regulatory pathway for private Indian space companies. The company competes with Bosch's quantum communications division, ID Quantique, and SpeQtral (Singapore) in the emerging miniaturized satellite QKD technology market.
