About Penn State Applied Research Lab

The Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University is a Department of Defense (DoD) designated University Affiliated Research Center (UARC) established in 1945 at the request of the U.S. Navy. ARL conducts research, development, and systems engineering focused on national security challenges, operating free from industry conflicts of interest. While initially founded to support the Navy, ARL currently serves all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces and other government agencies through a portfolio of over 400 programs.

ARL’s core technical capabilities encompass a broad range of disciplines, including communications, information, and navigation systems; fluid dynamics and acoustics; materials and manufacturing; and undersea systems. Research extends across multiple domains – from seabed to geo-synchronous orbit and throughout cyberspace – with a focus on areas like artificial intelligence, autonomy, advanced analytics, and multi-domain sensors. The laboratory performs research ranging from basic scientific exploration and proof-of-concept experimentation to applied research, rapid prototyping, and operational support.

ARL’s unique position as a UARC allows it to address critical technological needs with a long-term perspective, bridging the gap between fundamental research and practical application. This model facilitates innovation and provides the DoD with access to cutting-edge expertise without competitive pressures. Through its diverse research portfolio and collaborative partnerships, ARL plays a vital role in maintaining U.S. national security.
