Quick Facts
About Purdue Zucrow Labs
The Maurice J. Zucrow Laboratories at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana is the largest university rocket propulsion testing facility in the United States, named for Maurice Zucrow who founded Purdue's jet propulsion program in 1948 and whose textbooks defined the field for two generations of engineers.
The facility operates multiple outdoor test cells capable of testing liquid rocket engines producing hundreds of kilonewtons of thrust, solid rocket motors, hypersonic propulsion systems, and advanced combustion research equipment — a scale of test infrastructure that most universities cannot approach due to cost, safety, and noise footprint requirements.
Zucrow Labs hosts research in LOX/methane combustion (directly relevant to SpaceX's Raptor and Blue Origin's BE-4 engines), detonation wave combustion for rotating detonation engines (RDE, a next-generation cycle that offers thermodynamic efficiency beyond conventional gas turbines and rockets), cryogenic propellant fluid dynamics, and combustion instability modeling.
The labs are co-located with Purdue's School of Aeronautics and Astronautics — consistently ranked among the top three aerospace engineering schools in the US alongside MIT and Caltech — giving Zucrow faculty joint appointments and graduate students who conduct thesis research on actual hot-fire experiments rather than simulations only. Zucrow alumni hold senior propulsion engineering roles at virtually every U.S. rocket engine company: Aerojet Rocketdyne, Blue Origin, SpaceX, Northrop Grumman, and Firefly Aerospace.
The lab has received funding from NASA (Marshall, Glenn), DARPA, AFRL, and commercial companies developing next-generation propulsion systems. Purdue's Neil Armstrong connection — the first Moon-walker was a Purdue alumnus — gives the university a cultural aerospace identity matched by the technical reality of Zucrow's research.
