About QEYnet
QEYnet is an Ottawa-based Canadian quantum communications startup founded in 2016 that develops satellite-based quantum key distribution (QKD) systems — a cryptographic technique exploiting quantum mechanical principles to exchange encryption keys in a manner that is theoretically secure against any computational attack, including future quantum computers.
QKD exploits the measurement postulate of quantum mechanics: individual photons encoding quantum bits (qubits) are transmitted from a satellite to two ground stations simultaneously. Any eavesdropper intercepting the photon stream necessarily disturbs its quantum state in a detectable way — violating the no-cloning theorem — so the two ground stations can identify whether their channel was compromised before using the exchanged key bits for encryption. The resulting keys are information-theoretically secure regardless of the eavesdropper's computational power, unlike current RSA and elliptic curve public-key cryptography which becomes vulnerable to cryptographically relevant quantum computers (CRQCs).
Satellite QKD addresses the fundamental limitation of fiber-optic QKD: photon loss in fiber limits practical range to ~100-200 km before signal degradation makes key rates too low, requiring quantum repeaters (not yet practical). A satellite at LEO altitude ~500-600 km can establish a line-of-sight quantum channel to ground stations separated by thousands of kilometers during each overhead pass. China's QUESS/Micius satellite demonstrated intercontinental QKD over 7,600 km in 2017-2020, proving the satellite architecture concept.
QEYnet's program uses a small satellite (6U CubeSat class) carrying a miniaturized QKD transmitter to distribute keys to Canadian government and financial institution ground stations. The University of Waterloo's Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC) — one of the world's leading quantum research centers, where QEYnet founders have affiliations — provides scientific foundation and talent pipeline. The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) has funded Canadian QKD development as a sovereign cryptographic infrastructure priority.
Competitors include SpeQtral (Singapore, CQT spin-out with a dedicated QKD microsatellite), ArQit (UK, proposing QKD-as-a-service), and ID Quantique (Switzerland, ground-based QKD hardware). The "harvest now, decrypt later" threat — state actors storing today's encrypted traffic for future quantum decryption — drives near-term government procurement urgency.
