QinetiQ, headquartered at Cody Technology Park in Farnborough, Hampshire, was formed in 2001 through the privatisation of the UK's Defence Evaluation and Research Agency (DERA) and listed on the London Stock Exchange in 2006. Its space business grew through the 2005 acquisition of Belgian space-systems integrator Verhaert Design and Development (now QinetiQ Space, already listed separately in this dataset under its Kruibeke, Belgium base), and QinetiQ partnered with Surrey Satellite Technology to build STRAND-1, the first satellite to fly a smartphone as its main on-board computer, launched in 2013. This UK-headquartered parent entity is distinct from the Belgian QinetiQ Space subsidiary.
