About Qorvo
Qorvo is a Greensboro, North Carolina-based semiconductor company (Nasdaq: QRVO) formed in 2015 from the merger of RF Micro Devices and TriQuint Semiconductor — two companies with complementary compound semiconductor RF device portfolios, combining their combined 40+ years of space radiation heritage into a single entity. Qorvo provides gallium arsenide (GaAs) and gallium nitride (GaN) radio frequency integrated circuits, power amplifiers, low-noise amplifiers, switches, and integrated front-end modules with over one million space-qualified components launched across missions from LEO CubeSats through GEO communications satellites and deep space probes.
In space applications, Qorvo's most critical products are the GaAs and GaN power amplifiers for satellite transponder uplink and downlink chains. GaAs heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBTs) and pseudomorphic high-electron-mobility transistors (pHEMTs) operating at Ku, Ka, and V-band frequencies are essential for the high-efficiency, high-linearity amplification stages in GEO satellite transponders, where total DC power budget directly determines satellite mass and size. GaN amplifiers provide higher power density at lower supply voltages than GaAs, enabling more compact solid-state power amplifiers (SSPAs) that are replacing traveling wave tube amplifiers (TWTAs) in some satellite payload configurations.
Qorvo's radiation-hardened (rad-hard) and radiation-tolerant product lines are specifically designed and tested to withstand the cumulative ionizing dose, single-event upset (SEU), and single-event latchup (SEL) environments of GEO orbit (100 krad), MEO navigation satellite orbits (1 Mrad+), and deep space missions. The company's established radiation testing database and device qualification records make Qorvo the specified or sole-source supplier for many legacy satellite platforms that cannot easily switch semiconductor vendors.
For LEO constellation operators, Qorvo supplies more cost-optimized radiation-tolerant (rather than fully rad-hard) RF front ends for shorter mission lifetimes where qualification overhead costs must match smaller per-satellite economics. Qorvo competes with MACOM Technology Solutions, Wolfspeed (formerly Cree RF), and Microchip Technology (Microsemi) for the space-qualified RF semiconductor market.
