About QuantX Labs

Updated 2026-09-05

QuantX Labs is an Australian quantum technology company developing optical atomic clocks for space applications, spun out of quantum optics research from the University of Adelaide and the ARC Centre of Excellence for Engineered Quantum Systems.

Optical atomic clocks represent a generational leap beyond the microwave-based rubidium and cesium clocks currently flying in GPS and Galileo satellites: while current GNSS atomic clocks achieve nanosecond-level stability, optical clocks achieve femtosecond stability — roughly 1,000× more precise — because the optical oscillator frequency is orders of magnitude higher than microwave transitions, yielding finer time resolution per cycle. Space-qualified optical clocks would enable a next generation of PNT (Positioning, Navigation, and Timing) satellites with sub-centimeter positioning accuracy compared to today's meter-scale GPS.

QuantX Labs' KAIROS mission (targeting a 2025 launch window) aims to be the first space-qualification demonstration of an optical atomic clock in LEO orbit, validating that the technology can survive the thermal, vibration, and radiation environment of spaceflight. The company is supported by the Australian Space Agency, Innovate UK-equivalent Australian funding programs, and strategic interest from defense agencies seeking PNT resilience independent of US GPS.
