About Renesas Space

Updated 2026-09-05

Renesas Space is the space-dedicated product division of Renesas Electronics Corporation (Tokyo Stock Exchange: 6723), one of the world's leading semiconductor companies. Renesas Electronics was formed in 2010 from the merger of NEC Electronics and Renesas Technology.

The space heritage came primarily through Renesas's 2017 acquisition of US analog semiconductor company Intersil Corporation for approximately $3.2 billion — Intersil's space product line, which traced its lineage through Harris Semiconductor's radiation-hardened division (now Harris/Excelitas), included an established portfolio of rad-hard power management ICs, mixed-signal processors, and memory devices qualified for satellite applications.

Today Renesas Space offers JAXA-qualified radiation-hardened components including processors, power regulators, voltage references, and data converters used in Japanese government satellites (JAXA programs), international commercial GEO satellites, and military platforms requiring proven rad-hard semiconductors.

The division competes with BAE Systems (RAD750/RAD5545 processors), Microchip Technology (RTG4 FPGAs, SmartFusion2), Xilinx/AMD (Virtex radiation-tolerant FPGAs), and Cobham Advanced Electronic Solutions (CAES) in the radiation-hardened semiconductor market, which serves roughly 200-300 satellite launches annually requiring space-grade components.
