ReOrbit

ReOrbit is a Helsinki, Finland-based satellite technology company founded in 2019 that develops both satellite software platforms and complete satellite systems, with a particular focus on software-defined satellite architecture and optical inter-satellite communications. The company's dual product strategy positions it as both a direct satellite manufacturer and an enabler for operators building their own spacecraft using ReOrbit's software stack.

ReOrbit's flagship software product is Muon — a flight software operating system for satellites that abstracts the hardware layer from mission applications, allowing satellite developers to write mission software without deep embedded systems expertise and enabling hardware-agnostic software portability across different satellite platforms.

This approach mirrors the value proposition of commercial operating systems in computing: Muon provides standardized interfaces for attitude control, power management, communications protocols, payload interfaces, and telemetry handling that reduce software development time and risk for satellite programs. The OS architecture enables over-the-air (OTA) software updates in orbit — critical for constellation operators who need to push patches and mission logic updates to hundreds of satellites without individual ground contact sessions.

ReOrbit's hardware platform, the Gluon, is a complete satellite system integrating Muon flight software with optical communications terminal hardware for inter-satellite links (ISL) and high-rate ground-to-space optical downlink. Optical ISL capability enables satellite constellations to route data between spacecraft without ground hops, achieving LEO network latency and bandwidth characteristics suitable for real-time applications. For data downlink, optical communications (OCA, free-space optical) can achieve multi-gigabit per second rates that far exceed RF alternatives within the same antenna aperture and power budget.

Finland's space ecosystem — anchored by Iceye (SAR satellite manufacturer), Aurora Propulsion Technologies, and the Aalto University space engineering group — provides ReOrbit with a talent pool and partnership network. ReOrbit has participated in ESA's Phi-Lab experiments and Business Incubation programmes. The company competes with Kubos (RTOS for CubeSats), Xplore, and Exo-Space in the satellite software layer market, and with Telesat, AAC Clyde Space, and NanoAvionics for complete satellite manufacturing.
