Safran Aircraft Engines (formerly Snecma), headquartered in Courcouronnes near Paris and part of Safran Group — one of France's largest defense and aerospace conglomerates — is one of Europe's leading rocket engine and spacecraft propulsion manufacturers, with a heritage stretching from France's early ballistic missile programs through current contributions to European launch vehicle main propulsion, satellite ion propulsion, and exploration mission thrusters.

Safran's most significant space propulsion contribution is to the European Vulcain series of cryogenic rocket engines: the Vulcain and Vulcain 2 powered all Ariane 5 core stage flights, with Safran responsible for turbopump manufacture, combustion chamber assembly, and thrust chamber production as part of the ArianeGroup industrial chain (ArianeGroup is itself a 50/50 Safran-Airbus joint venture). The upgraded Vulcain 2.1 that powers Ariane 6's EPC core stage continues Safran's central role in European launcher propulsion. Safran also contributed the HM7B upper stage engine that powered Ariane 5's ESC-A cryogenic upper stage through 2023.

Beyond expendable launcher engines, Safran develops electric propulsion for satellite station-keeping and orbit raising through its PPS (Plasma Propulsion System) Hall-effect thruster family — including the PPS-1350 that has flown on ESA's SMART-1 lunar probe (the first European spacecraft to reach the Moon using electric propulsion) and on multiple Telesat, SES, and OneWeb commercial satellites. Safran's electric thrusters offer specific impulses of 1,500-1,900 seconds, enabling significant propellant mass savings for GEO satellites compared to chemical bipropellant systems.

Safran also manufactures apogee kick motors, attitude control thrusters using hydrazine monopropellant and bipropellant (MON/MMH) systems, and has been involved in exploration mission propulsion systems. The company is a member of ESA's industrial supply chain for Vega, Ariane, and science mission propulsion, and serves international customers through Safran's space business unit.
